Agra is a small city, above all, home to the monument that brings millions of tourists to India every year, the one and only, Taj Mahal. Because it is a part of the Golden Triangle, together with New Delhi and Jaipur, it makes it easily accessible by train and by road.Firstly, I didn’t spend much time in Agra. We arrived in the afternoon and left the next day in the evening. Probably like most people, we only went there to visit Taj Mahal and then head it back to our next destination on the list.
One of the Seven Wonders of the World, certainly the most impressive symbol of love that is actually a mausoleum. It’s also probably one of the spots found on most bucket lists.
We arrived at the West Gate at 6:30 AM and there were only a few people queuing at the ticket counter. Once you buy the ticket, go and pick your free bottle of water and the shoe cover. Thre are certain areas you are not allowed to wear shoes.
- Above all, go there as early as possible to avoid queues (opens at 6 AM).
- Don’t bring a big bag because you’ll have to go through a security check
- Don’t bring a tripod, pencils or matches because you will have to go out, store them in the lockers and then queue again.
- Don’t pay a guide because you have it included in the foreigner ticket price. Students from the universities are hired by the Government to guide you through so they can practice English.
Price: 1050Rs (13€) – you can also pay by card or book it online here.

Where to stay
I recommend you to choose accommodation close to Taj Mahal. It also seems like we found the best place to recommend. Hotel Sidhartha is located 5 minutes walking from the West Gate on a very quiet street where the access of cars and tuk-tuks is restricted. The hotel was very clean and the staff nice. In conclusion, it offers all you need to be comfortable.
Where to eat
The food in this restaurant is delicious and the price very good. But above all, the owner of the place, who is also serving the clients, it’s the sweetest person ever and delivers the best service.
How to get to Agra
Firstly, the train schedule between New Delhi and Agra is very good and you have many options to pick from. As a result, you can even go there and come back in the same day.
Duration: 2-4 hours, depending on the train you choose.
Tip: Even more, Uber and Ola work here, therefore, don’t get tired with the tuk-tuk drivers trying to overcharge you.
You can check here how to easily use both apps.
To sum it up, it is certainly worth visiting the Taj Mahal, but I wouldn’t spend too much time in Agra. To clarify, I found it dirty, smelly and, above all, with quite aggressive dogs.
