I decided to start my nomadic year by doing a Yoga Teacher Training Course in Rishikesh, one of the holiest places in India. I thought it will be smoother for me to start my journey with some guidance than completely on my own.
WHY A YOGA TEACHER TRAINING IN RISHIKESH?
After practicing yoga on and off for some years now, I wanted to gain more knowledge. Weather it was practical or theoretical, I felt like there was more to know. There are various places where you can do your training in Europe, but I was curious about the whole experience. That is to say, I was searching for an authentic experience.
Rishikesh is a mountain village crossed by the Ganges, located at the foothills of the Himalayas, in the north side of India. It is also know as the “Yoga Capital of the World“. It’s a vibrant place with many organic stores, local shops and delicious food.
Important for visitors to know, Rishikesh has a traffic-free and alcohol-free policy, and you can find only vegetarian food.
HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR YOGA TEACHER TRAINING CENTRE?
I did more or less 1 month of research before deciding which school to pick. I initially asked friends and consulted my teachers. Secondly, I checked all YTTC’s on BookYogaRetreats.com, read reviews, and sent e-mails.
I ended up choosing “Rishikesh Yoga Teacher Training Center” for my 200-hour course and it was the best choice for me. You can check their website for all the information you might need.

HOW TO GET TO RISHIKESH, INDIA?
India is very well connected by planes and there’s an airport almost everywhere. Most probably, your point of entry is going to be New Delhi Airport. From there, the easiest way and also a cheap one is to take another flight to Dehradun. Dehradun Airport is approximately 1 hour away from Rishikesh. After that, the school will probably arrange a pick-up for you. Therefore, don’t forget to take this into consideration when booking your school.
IMPORTANT ASPECTS BEFORE BOOKING
- The school’s price: Take into account that some schools are more expensive than others just because they’re located next to the Ganges.
- Yoga Alliance: Check if the school you choose is a Registered Yoga School (RYS)
- The weather: Winter in Rishikesh is from September until March, while summer start from March until June. In between, there’s monsoon season from July to September. Winter can be very cold, and summer can be very hot, so choose wisely depending on your preferences.
